Did I mention this before? That at school pickup one day, I joked about how there’s nothing like the imminent arrival of a baby to make you so ambitiously set on overhauling every aspect of your life?
We are creeping into that period of time when “anything can happen.” Baby can come now, or a month from now, and it’s becoming a funny little game every time we wake up: what else can we knock off the list? What more can we do?
When we first started to seriously plan and try for a baby, I made a “Done Before Baby” list. It was just another little part of my mind-nesting, thinking through all the ways that (ideally) we’d be set up in our home and work ahead of bringing home a newborn. On the list included things like long-awaited house updates, closets to clean out, overdue business back-burner to-dos, and projects like archiving our years and years of family iPhone photos into albums for the kids to enjoy (alas this one in particular is not getting done anytime soon).
The ambition behind the list was to mentally? emotionally? physically? start from a clean slate. To simplify and remove areas of chaos and half-done projects from the mental load.
Yet as we get closer, the list just keeps growing. This unique time crunch is making us more creative about where and how we can innovate across life and business. It’s making us more efficient in what we are getting done and more clear on where to let go.
The list is never meant to be completed in its entirety. There is always more, and that’s the game of it all.
