There is definitely something about a baby coming that has made me get very serious suddenly about all the things I’ve put off learning for 31 years.
The reality of baby’s imminent arrival makes me see everything as a hardcore educational opportunity. It’s no longer adequate for me to know how to take the car seat in and out; I must be know exactly how to install the base should Adam not be around. I am poring over alllll the health insurance ins and outs and furiously taking notes at webinars that get into the hairy specifics of plans and HSA accounts.
The next on my list is learning how to clean out every single vacuum filter and part we have in the house — and all the use-cases for the attachments that we never use.
It’s all weirdly specific. And many of these things have always been in my husband’s wheelhouse, as we divide and conquer the mental load. (I’m already eyeing the grill as I write this, wondering if I have time to learn how to properly barbecue.)
But as the nesting mind takes over, so does an urgency to uplevel my knowledge on every operational element of our home.
And so, as I wash baby’s clothes I also watch YouTube videos on fixing kitchen drawers and making homemade salad dressings.
