At our baby shower we requested guests bring a book for the baby, instead of a card. It’s my favorite shower tradition — a way to indulge my love of picture books and ensure (even if by brute force) this kid is a reader.
(Still my favorite memories with my stepdaughter are all the bedtime stories and library trips of her toddlerhood. A stack of books was always the antidote to ward off screen time during a meal or keep bath time less splish-splashy and more calming.)
Our guests wrote notes to the baby inside the covers, and now that we’re back home and unwinding, I get the time to really take them all in.
One message in particular is staying with me, hours later. My cousin gifted Waiting Is Not Easy! by Mo Willems. Her note: “The best things are worth the wait!”
Oh gosh, how they are. We’ve been waiting for this baby for years. And now he’s almost here.
